Army Emergency Relief Announces 4,149 Scholarship Awards

ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 15, 2016 –Army Emergency Relief (AER) announced the award of 3,094 scholarships under the MG James Ursano Scholarship Program for children of Active Duty and Retired Soldiers, and 1,055 scholarships under the Spouse Education Assistance Program. This year’s awards total $7.9 million.

“We believe that helping the Children and Spouses of Soldiers to continue their education greatly contributes to the financial well-being of the Army Family,” said Tammy LaCroix, supervisor for AER’s scholarship programs.  “Obtaining a college degree increases the student’s long-term earning potential and contributes to a more stable future.”

AER scholarships are awarded to the children and Spouses of active duty and retired Soldiers based solely on financial need. Applications are accepted on AER’s website,, each year between 1 January and 1 May. All instructions and requirements can be found on the website.

For 2015-2016, AER also awarded seven scholarships totaling $285,590 under the Pentagon Victims’ Scholarship Fund which was established to provide undergraduate education assistance for children of Soldiers killed or severely wounded in the terrorist attack on the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.  The 2016-2017 scholarships will be awarded later this summer.

AER received a total of 7,685 applications for the 2016-2017 academic year.  Of those who completed the application process and provided the required documentation, 83% received a scholarship award.
