Spouse Education Assistance Program
only for Dependent Spouses of Active Duty Soldiers assigned to Europe, Korea, Japan or Okinawa.

AER is dedicated to "Helping the Army take care of its own".

AER is a private non-profit organization with the mission to help soldiers and their dependents. AER's primary mission is to provide financial assistance to soldiers and their dependents in time of valid emergency need.

AER's Spouse Education Assistance Program is a secondary mission to help Army families with the costs of post secondary undergraduate level education and vocational training to prepare dependent spouses for the job market.


PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be … 
   Dependent spouse of soldier on active duty, assigned in Europe, Korea, Japan or Okinawa. (Active Duty Soldiers are not eligible)  
   Dependent spouse must reside with soldier at one of the above locations.
   Must be U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident.
All eligible spouses are encouraged to apply.


AER SPOUSE EDUCATION ASSISTANCE
   Applicants must be enrolled, accepted, or pending acceptance as students for the entire term in post-secondary or vocational institutions under contract at the education office and approved by the U.S. Department of Education for Title IV funds.
   Employees of Schools and Ed Centers who receive free tuition as a result of their employment will not receive tuition assistance from AER. However, they may apply for assistance for fees, supplies and/or books (no duplicates) for classes in which they are enrolled. Second undergraduate level, graduate level, second bachelor and second masters degrees are not included.
   Program participants must maintain at least a cumulative 2.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 grading scale.
   Spouses may attend on a part time or full time basis.


EDUCATION ASSISTANCE APPLICATIONS
   The AER Spouse Application is available upon written request to HQ AER, AER Sections, Schools, and Education Centers or may be downloaded from the AER Web Site, www.aerhq.org.
   Completed applications with supporting documents must be mailed to HQ AER postmarked not later than:
TERM 1 = July 14, 2003
TERM 2 = September 29, 2003
TERM 3 = December 15, 2003
TERM 4 = March 01, 2004
TERM 5 = May 10, 2004
 
   To be considered, the assistance application must be complete, accurate and contain all required documents and signatures when received.
   Term renewal forms must be submitted for each academic year with verification for each term for existing students.


USES OF EDUCATION ASSISTANCE FUNDS
   The assistance funds must be used to assist with tuition, fees, supplies and books (no duplicates) for classes in which they are enrolled.


ASSISTANCE AWARDED
   Assistance will be awarded up to half the cost of tuition per term based on relative financial need, as evidenced by income, assets, family size, special financial obligations and circumstance with a $350 maximum per academic term.
   Assistance funds awarded will not be disbursed if cumulative GPA falls below 2.0.


DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED
(See Instructions, # 10)
   Completed application. 
   Transcript of all grades verifying GPA of at least a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.
   Copy of Soldier’s L.E.S.
   Current PCS Orders to current duty station. Please note: A copy of the student's discharge orders/DD214 is needed (along with the soldier's PCS Orders) if previously in the USA, USN, USAF, USMC, RES or GRD.  Active Duty soldiers are not eligible for this program.
