Army Emergency Relief Announces Spouse Scholarship Awards
ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 18, 2012 –Army Emergency Relief (AER) announced the award of 757 scholarships under the Spouse Scholarship Program. The scholarships, awarded to the Spouses of Active Duty and Retired Soldiers, totaled $2.2 million.
AER received 767 complete applications and was able to award 757 scholarships. AER began accepting applications in December with a deadline of April 1st. Transcripts were due April 2nd, with the final Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) documentation due by May 1st.
Spouse scholarships are awarded based on financial need. A student could qualify under one or both criteria, so the size of the awards varies. This year the average award was $3,205. Notification letters were mailed earlier this month.
Earlier this year AER announced the consolidation of its spouse scholarship programs. Previously, there were separate programs for spouses depending on whether they were located in the United States or overseas.
“The consolidation of the two Spouse scholarship programs simplified the application process, as well as allowed all Spouses to qualify for part-time attendance,” said Diann Evans, manager for AER’s scholarship programs. “This change allows us to provide better service for all the applicants.”
Prior to this year, only overseas spouses could get scholarships for ‘part time’ attendance. However, overseas spouses had to apply five times per year. The consolidation allowed all Spouses to apply once, aligning both programs with the stateside spouses who will now be able to get assistance while only attending school part-time.
Earlier this month AER announced the award of 2,614 scholarships to Children of Soldiers under the Maj. Gen. James Ursano Scholarship Program.
Army Emergency Relief is a private non-profit organization dedicated to providing financial assistance to Soldiers, active and retired, and their Families. Since its incorporation in 1942, AER has provided more than $1.4 billion to more than 3.4 million Soldiers, Families and Retirees.
